Kona Coffee

What is Kona Coffee?

In order to call itself Kona Coffee, the plantation of the coffee beans must be in the Kona District of the Big Island of Hawaii, on the slopes of Hualalai and Mauna Loa. Coffee from other regions may not be called Kona, although there are so called Kona blends. In contrast to the real and pure Kona, these coffees often consist of a very low percentage of Kona beans, the rest is cheaper beans from other countries. While this blend or mix is alot cheaper than the pure Kona, it doesn't really carry the great taste of Kona, so we recommend staying with the original.

Where to buy Kona Coffee?

There are various online shops offering Kona Coffee today, you can find a little overview on this blog. In general, always pay attention to the product images and watch out for terms like "100% Kona" or "Pure Kona" if you want to make sure to buy the original coffee and no cheap mixes.

What is the price of Kona Coffee?

Prices are varying alot, depending on the quality category of the beans as well as the rarity. Pure Kona prices range from about $20 per pound up to $50 per pound. We'd recommend to order a variety or gift package with several 1 pound bags to find out the differences before ordering 5 pound or bigger bags. In general, you can't really go wrong since all types of beans are good quality and make a great gift, too.

What makes Kona Coffee so unique?

It's several factors, but first of all the volcanic soil and the climate that's perfect for coffee beans. Second, the fact that all plantations are very traditional on contrast to the mass plantation you'll find elsewhere. If you are planning a trip to Hawaii, you can even visit many of them.
